About ACCYP
This is a City-wide project, specifically designed to benefit African Caribbean young people; Black /Black British young people; and young people with White-Caribbean and White-
African mixed heritage, in the age range 11 to 25. Although targeted in this way the project will not be exclusive. It is therefore anticipated that other young people who may also choose to relate to this provision will benefit accordingly. The project will bring together voluntary and statutory sector partner organisations whose work and responsibilities relate to the needs of the above group.
Our Purpose
The African Caribbean Centre for Young People aims to improve the infrastructure of services and support to young people from Coventry's African Caribbean community. The Coventry Youth Service has invested Neighbourhood Renewal funds in premises located in Hillfields to serve as a Project Centre / Resource Base. The Centre will be at the heart of the development of a new multi-agency and inter-disciplinary approach to the delivery of services responsive to the specific needs of African Caribbean Young People. Initially the project will seek to bring together and develop the strands of targeted provision that currently exist for African Caribbean young people. Strategically, the Centre will play a key role in removing the
barriers to Black young people's success by working in close collaboration with other mainstream services to reduce factors associated with:
Inequality - in relation to access and opportunity
School under achievement, disaffection and exclusion
Social exclusion and political marginalisation
Involvement in crime and community conflict.
Our Aim
The Centre will provide young people with:
A safe and credible environment for free association and learning - that embodies respect for African Caribbean heritage and is free from racism and challenges oppressive behaviour.
Direct access to specialist support and advice - provided by trusted staff and volunteers who have a developed understanding of the issues facing Black young people.
A range of developmental activity programmes and informal education projects - designed with young people to meet their needs and interests to promote learning and the acquisition of new skills.
In addition, the Centre will aim to:
Equip young people with the skills, confidence and motivation to articulate their own needs; and to participate more fully in Community and/or Service: consultations, project development, decision-making, and resource funding.
Provide support, advice, guidance and information to organisations within the African Caribbean Community.
Bring Black workers from various professions together to share practice and learn from each other's expertise.
